Two years ago, Piper Aircraft Inc. was mulling a move out of Vero Beach, and its first-ever jet was little more than a concept on paper
(PressMethod) - Piper Aircraft is expanding its staff in the seaside city as it gears up to manufacture the new plane.
PiperJet prototype flew over 200 potential customers at Vero Beach Municipal Airport, where Piper decided in May its headquarters would remain. Now that Vero Beach has two new high-end resorts on the ocean, the plane maker has accommodations to wine and dine its well-heeled customers - something it didn't have years ago.
Apparently the city and the company made a good impression.
Piper took orders for five PiperJets and two of the company's turboprop Meridians during its show-and-tell last week - a record for a two-day event, said Bob Kromer, vice president of sales, marketing and aftermarket support for the company.
So far, customers and dealers have placed 203 orders for the $2.2 million PiperJet.
"We're very happy about that," Kromer said. "That's at least two full years of production."
"You're witnessing the beginning of a new era for the company," President and Chief Executive Officer James Bass told reporters who gathered last week to get a glimpse of the jet in flight.
